دوربین برای بهبود کیفیت تصویر به ویژه در محیط های کم نور از مکانیزم های الکترونیکی مانند AGC استفاده می کند. این مکانیزم ها به صورت الکترونیکی سیگنال تصویر را تقویت می کنند. مشکل اینجاست که به همراه سیگنال، نویز هم در این روند تقویت می شود. پس خواه ناخواه ما همیشه در تصویر نویز خواهیم داشت، به ویژه زمانی که نور محیط کم باشد.

نویز الکترونیکی به وجود آمده در تصویر معمولا شکلی مشخص دارد. این نویز معمولا خود را به صورت نقاط رنگی کوچک در تصویر نشان میدهد، DNR با استفاده از یک مکانیزم ساده پردازش این نویز را شناسایی کرده و تا جای ممکن آن را کم می کند. البته این روش نمی تواند تمام نویز را تصویر از بین ببرد اما در سطوح صاف و یک رنگ تقریبا نویز از بین خواهد رفت.

مکانیزم 3D DNR یا DNR سه بعدی، برای کاهش نویز پا را یک مرحله فراتر می گذارد. در این مکانیزم گذشته از بررسی فریم به فریم تصویر و کاهش نویز، فریم ها با هم مقایسه می شوند و با توجه به تغییر در تصویر نویز شناسایی و حذف می شود. این روش تاثیر DNR را به مراتب افزایش می دهد.
